Amazing: Africa Has a 2 Billion Years Old Nuclear Reactor and It’s Natural

A deposit in Africa spontaneously experienced a nuclear fission, 2 billion years ago. According to the words of the scientists, the 16 sites of the nuclear reactor have been operating for about 500.000 years in the past. Amazingly, the massiveness of this nuclear reactor is nothing to be compared with the nowadays nuclear reactors which have seemingly smaller size in design and function.

Containing 16 sites, the nuclear reactor is surprising the scientist. Its amazing nature and power that was active for hundreds of millennia make it the biggest so far.

This discovery is so big that puts shadows over every other nuclear reactor ever found. The natural nuclear reactor of Oklo was the greatest discovery for the physicians.

When we think about a nuclear reactor we think of an artificially created structure. But in this case this nuclear reactor is found beneath the region filled with natural uranium in Okla, Gabon.

Due to the activeness of the Uranium, the nuclear reactions took place in conditions that occurred perfect for it to develop.

Moreover, Oklo is considered to be the only place in the world where a natural nuclear reactor persists. Not only its enormous 16-sites-construction, but the fact that it was there from around 1.7 billion years ago gives this reactor unique image. The question here is why this is the only place on earth with natural nuclear reactor?

Reports have explained the formation of the natural nuclear reactor. It began when the rich mineral deposit that the uranium has collided with the groundwater. The groundwater actually acted as a neutron moderator, so the place was taken by a chain of nuclear reactions. The produced heat then made the groundwater to boil away and slowly made the reaction to stop. After the mineral deposit cooled off the water came back and there was a reaction to it again. This cycle goes every 3 hours. The cycles were happening for thousands of years until the materials which decreased couldn’t support the chain reactor.

In 1972, French scientists used uranium ore that was found in a Gabon’s mine and made tests on the uranium content. The Uranium ore is made of three uranium isotopes, containing different number of neutrons. They are Uranium 234, Uranium 235, and Uranium 238.

The scientists are mostly intrigued by the Uranium 235 because of its nuclear chain reactions.

The most surprising part is that the creation of the nuclear reaction was because of the creation of the plutonium which moderated the nuclear reaction. The scientists refer to this situation as the ‘holy grail’ in the atomic science. They also came to a conclusion that water was being used when it came to moderating the reaction. The moderating was done the same way when graphite-cadium is used nowadays to cool down the nuclear reactors. The graphite-cadium is used to prevent the reaction of exploding. And imagine all of this done by the nature. It is incredible to even think of it.

But the main question is what kept the mechanism protected from exploding? Which parts of the deposit protected it?
