Irritation of the sciatic nerve causes sciatica. This sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the human body, it begins from the nerve roots in the spinal cord in the lower back and goes all the way from the buttock to the feet. Sciatica pain is mostly felt from the lower back to behind the thigh and can go to the feet. This pain can cause Piriformis syndrome, which is a condition in which the piriformis muscle ( located behind the buttock ) is contracted and causes buttock pain. Whilst in this condition, piriformis muscle can irritate sciatic nerves in his surrounding causing numbness, pain from the lower back to the foot.
